Chinese early 18th century eggshell small porcelain two quail pattern tea bowl made during the reign of the Emperor Yongzheng.
The painting is excellent and slightly heightened with gilt to show a pair of confronting Quails with a small spray of Chrysanthemums and rockwork. The detail is excellent
In Chinese folk lore the quail represents peace and courage which is slightly strange combination. The quail also represents the Scholar trying to pass his examinations despite facing many obstacles. two Quails are also for harmony where you need courage not to be confrontational and therefore be peaceful and harmonious.
The Two Quail pattern became the basis for the Japanese and Early Meissen Kakiemon pattern.
