Chinese 18th century thick green glazed brush rest. Made for the scholars table. the shape known as the five peaks as it represents the Five celestial mountains of mythology. The brush rest is gently curved in a shallow arc.

the thick apple green glaze with a slight crackle is an excellent colour and is a porcelain representation of Jade.

Mountains are one of the twelve symbols of the Emperor symbolising the earth and stability. Mountains were also important as it was thought that they created the clouds that brought the rain, without which there was no rice the most important crop of the farmer for subsistence.

the hard wood stand is 18th century and was made for the brush rest and is a fine example of type.
