Transitional 17th century blue and white porcelain base of a vase made during the reign of the Emperor Shunzhi, the first of the Qing Dynasty Emperors.

Painted with a bright vibrant cobalt to show a warrior scene of a mounted archer, pike men, swordsman and trees by the sea with the Penglai islands in the distance.

The painting is excellent with great detail and movement, all in a bright cobalt blue.

the vase was probably a large bottle vase which has become separated cleanly at the luting join/line. Often these vases were only held together by the glaze which was probably the case with this looking along the join.
