Ming / transitional ko-sometsuke plate painted I over glaze enamels in the Wucai palette. The plate is made for the Japanese market at Jingdezhen at the end of the Ming dynasty

It shows a scholar sitting on a rocky promontory wearing a soft hat and flowing robes. The setting shows a large louts flower in the water and I the distance rocky ledges and pines with a leafless tree and flowering bush A small sun is in the sky.

According the similar one in the Butler Family Collection the figure represents ZhouDunyi (Zhou Maoshu 1017 -1073) Chinas first neo Confucian Cosmologist

The enamels are bright and the painting for ko-sometsuke very good
