Painted in the Kraak style and mades at the end of the Ming Dynasty between 1620 - 1640. the box is an oval with rounded sides and inside has two compartments. The painting shows a turbulent seaand a precious object associated with Buddhism - a vase tied with ribbon.

There was a very similar box and cover recovered from the cargo of the Witte Leeuw which sank c1613 and is illustrated in the book of the same name which was edited by C L van Der Pijl - Ketel for the Rijksmuseum 1982 ISBN 90 - 9309 - 6 p138 Rinaldi in Kraak porcelain also illustrates on e and a few were found in the Hatcher cargo which sank in c1642.

The piece is well made and with good colour and form.

There real use is associated with womens vanaties or cosmetic use and seems to have been a trinket for the dressing table.
