late Ming small jar made during the Emperor Wanlis reign c1600 for storage of ginger / spices.

Painted with jumping boys waving banners, flying kites or holding flags on a terrace / garden setting in front of a fence

Small jars such as these were the original size of ginger jars a term which came later to refer to any lidded jar regardless of size. Ginger was an expensive spice and needed careful storage
