Wanli, Ming, small blue and white plate with excellent painting of two Lohans in a fenced garden on a terrace beneath a pine tree. The border painted with flowering bamboo which is very unusual. The underside is painted with fruiting vines and a double circle around a four character mark that reads May infinite good fortune surround you

The lohans are probably Pin-tou-lu-O-lo-sui-shih asecond Pindola or elder. he is often referred to as the Hairy one, rather like Esau in the Old Testament or Hebrew scriptures. The smaller Lohan is possibly Nan-ti-mi-to-Ching-yu Nandimitra.

The whole scene on the front is very unusual but the way it is painted and the colour is typical of the pieces that were produced during the early part of the reign of the Emperor Wanli.

Shows reverence and humour.
