Ming - Chinese 16th century - blue and white porcelain small plate. Excellent colour and potting with an unusual design. Painted to the centre with a toad in an aquatic setting.

The Toad has been depicted in Chinese folk culture since the earliest times as a symbol of longevity and of the unattainable. It was thought that the toad resided on the moon and fell to earth with the dew. An aquatic scene is also representative of health and well being.

The sides are painted with a continuous band of ruyi headed shaped emblems which are synonymous with Imperial power.

The underside painted with flowering tendrils and crescent moons.

Some kiln grit is adhering to the foot rim.
