Chinese Mandarin Rank badge from the front of a sixth rank Mandarin showing an Egret. The badge shows intense embroidery of predominately couched gilt thread but with a rare piece of detail around the bird, here it has been outlined in forbidden or blind stitch. This picks out the detail of the wings, feathers and head of the bird.

The bird stands on a rock above a very turbulent sea. The back ground is virtually filled with Ruyi headed shaped clouds and Buddhist emblems with a large gilt sun disk. This would imply that when the badge was commissioned that it was towards the end of an Emperors reign or that the Emperor was weak. The border has a stylized fence pattern with auspicious items.

The badge was made in two halves as it was applied to either side of the opening on the front of the Mandarins robe.
