Mandarin Square / Rank badge of a Military officer 5th rank showing a Bear. The badge has a coral bead sun with very fine beads.

The background of the badge has an intricate design of a lattice work with ruyi head clouds and precious antiques, objects and Buddhist emblems scattered in the sky and in the turbulent waves above the stripy sea. The border has shou signs alternating with bats.

This badge is from the front of the wifes robe and was made in two halves so it went either side of the opening of the robe. It has now been put together and conserved.

the whole badge is in gilt and more unusually silver thread and was high status badge because of its cost.

the badge contains much detail and auspicious objects for health wealth longevity and good fortune.

The potential position of the fifth rank would have included Police Captain, Lieutenant and First Lieutenant. If recently appointed then it could have belonged to a gate guard Lieutenant or Second Captain.
