Kangxi - Chinese late 17th century early 18th century - soft paste porcelain white glazed compressed form lidded box with incised under glaze decoration.

The box is very light and delicate with an elegant shape and gently rounded sides and is very tactile. The was to be used as a paste box although often described as a seal box. It would have been filled with the red paste that seals were pressed in to before being stamped on to documents, scrolls or works of art. There is still some red staining of the paste to the inside especially around the inside of the rim.

The elegant under glaze decoration to the top is of an incised flower spray and around the top of the base below the rim is a band of scrolling waves.

The piece is of excellent quality with an understated elegance.

Soft paste porcelain was made by slightly under firing the porcelain at a lower kiln temperature and not by changing the porcelain as was the case with European soft paste porcelain
