Chinese early 18th century soft paste compressed form lidded box probably a paste box. Painted to the top with two figures one riding a horse the other a buffalo while the sides are painted with rockwork and small tufts of grasses.

Chinese soft paste was not a different chemical composition to their hard paste, European soft paste is different to Chinese soft paste, but it is fired at a lower temperature in the kilns. The early forms of soft paste often take on the creamy colour with a light crackle glaze as is the case with this piece.
