Chinese early 18th century powder porcelain blue saucer plate made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi. Excellent colour and form with over glaze decoration of gilt painting.

The painting shows a low scholars table - kang table - with a model of a recumbent deer and a large vase with flowers. Beside the table are two confronting cockerels with grasses.

The glaze pales away from the rim showing the quality of the glaze and the body.

Powder blue glazes are different from other Chinese glazes as the cobalt was blown dry on the raw body of the piece. It was blown through a bamboo with a gauze stretched over the end. This produces a frothy effect to the glaze and a good blue colour on the best, which is what this.
