Early 18th century Chinese blue and white pounce pot or sander. Made during the middle of the reign of the Emperor Kangxi for export to Europe.

The shape is known as a drum shape sander and this one is particularly well painted with bright blue. The top is painted with auspicious ruyi heads in a roundel which also reflects the lotus flower pattern with a double circle around the outside.

The sides are painted with clouds and some of the precious treasures again all auspicious and with a strong influence of the scholar and the decoration that would be associated with a Chinese Scholar.

To the base there is an Artemisia leaf painted again an excellent mark for a small item.

Although made for export the decoration is all Chinese taste and painted very well.

The Drum shaped sanders are always desirable as they are rarer than the other forms and this is a very good example.
