Chinese 18th century blue and white porcelain brush washer from the kilns at Jingdezhen. Made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi and would have been used by a member of the Literarti being a piece for the Scholars table One of the prized possessions.

The decoration is unusual and is based on a Islamic or Tibetan style with the stylized budding Lotus flower appearing in four motifs. To the shoulder and above the foot rim there is a hatched stylized flower head pattern.

To the base there is a four character Zhuanshu mark.

The colour is excellent and small pieces like this are much collected.

The unusual design and the use the piece means that it was intended for the Chinese home market and not for export to the west.
