Chinese early 18th century blue and white bowl made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi at the kilns of Jingdezhen for export to Europe. Excellent painting, colour, potting and subject matter, The Romance of the Western Chamber.

Painted around the outside of the bowl with dignitaries talking in a studio setting with a messenger, a garden setting to the outside and another scene with a lady talking to the two dignitaries in the same studio.

The underside of the rim is painted with ruyi headed shaped clouds and to the top of the rim with tree canopies.

The inside painted with three jumping boys playing with a warriors helmet in an open setting with rocks and clouds.

Six character Cheng Hua mark to the base inside a double circle. The mark is an apocryphal one to honour and not to deceive.

The Everted rim was specific for the western market as it supported a spoon or other cutlery when not being used, so it did not fall into the food or have to put doen on the table.
