Annamese blue and white box and cover. Despite being submerged in water the box and cover is in excellent condition. Painted to the top with a lotus flower head and around the base waves.

It was made in what is now modern day Vietnam at the kilns at Chu Dou being the largest and most important kilns in the 14 - 15th century in kingdom of Annam. the box and cover is typical of the ware being produced having quick flowing painting.

The cargo that was salvaged by Oxford university having sunk off the coast Hoi an c1490 and subsequently sold through Butterfields in San Francisco. Provenance to the base
