Chinese mandarin Square / Mandarin Rank badge for the military. Shows a second rank Lion which was made for the back of the wifes robe.

Excellent couched gilt thread embroidery showing the lion standing on a rock above a turbulent sea. The sky is intensely in filled with gilt thread decoration with ruyi headed clouds and Buddhist emblems. This type of embroidery usually occurred towards the end of an Emperors reign when the wearer was trying to use as many good luck or good fortune motifs to keep his position at the start of the new regime.

the lion is unusual as it is in couched silver and green thread which in the case of the silver has tarnished.

Military rank badges are much rarer and more collected than the more common civil badges.

The rank of the second rank military would be a banner captain or Major General and responsible for many army divisions, rather like the same rank in the European armies.

Excellent subject and stitch work. This badge is mounted but not framed
