Chinese Mandarin Rank Badge from the front of a Childs Robe. The bird is a silver Pheasant for the 5th rank of the civil service. The bird is appliqued on to the badge
Although children were not officially allowed to show the rank of their father when the Emperors power was weak or he was indifferent to the protocol this was over looked.
Childrens rank badges for this reason are not as common as the adult ones and often not in such good condition
The fifth rank of the civil service were responsible for various jobs including circuit judges, inspectors of the salt distribution and instructors at the Imperial School
This badge is from the front of the robe and is intricately embroidered with various gilt and coloured metallic threads. The badge was made in two halves so that it went across the front opening of the robe.
