Chinese blue and white late Ming / early Transitional ovoid jar. painted in under glaze blue with an unusual design of scrolling lotus with gambolling Budhistic lions.

The colour is what is often referred to by old collectors as violets in milk which describes the almost floating quality of the cobalt painting, as well as the faint hue of a violet in the blue.

The kilns were able to fire hotter during this period than the preceding Ming era so producing a brighter white and a more perfect blue colour.

The flat bottom of the jar is typical of this age.
